[When Dirk turns on his Pokegear, he’s leaning against a wall somewhere, bundled up in his ridiculous Christmas sweater. Maybe it’s hard to tell thanks to his habit of wearing sunglasses all the time, but to those who know him, he might seem kind of tired.]

A word of advice for future Christmases. If you’re planning on getting your friend an egg, first figure out how many of their other friends are giving them eggs too. Otherwise, they might have five eggs hatch on the same day.

[At this point, Dirk turns the SFC around to show a collection of baby pokemon at his feet, including a Ralts, Charmander, Houndour, Feebas, and Ponyta. As soon as Dirk’s attention is directed to them, they all start clamoring for attention.]

Anyone else have the same problem?

I've had three hatch at the same time, and I'm still waiting on one.

I'm still waiting on two. Can't say I'm all that disappointed about the delay.

For a given definition of manageable, sure. Jake's being roped into babysitting, if I have any say in it.

I hope he has experience. I expect that I might be getting roped into babysitting for some of Strider's babies as well, if the swarm proves too much to handle.

He's addicted to buying pokemon eggs, according to some of the others, I'd hope he has a handle on it by now.

[There is some serious snickering going on.]

If I had to guess, I'd say he likes being a father figure to all those Pokemon. It might not even take much to get that Jake kid to babysit for you.

Jake English is not fit for being a father figure. Possibly he is fit for being a trainer.

Then perhaps he's just looking for a family or surrogate family in those Pokemon.

Plausible, but if that were the case I would expect seeking out a mentor, instead of turning into a guardian himself. There's not that much family you can get out of what's essentially a group of pets, anyway.

I believe it might be the sentiment of caring for something like family that may entice someone. Though, I wouldn't say that psychic types are essentially pets, since there are quite a number of them that have human intelligence. It may be that he just feels lonely, and surrounding himself with cute little creatures makes it less lonely.

[She shrugs. God, that psychobabble Rose dabbles in rubs off on a woman after a while.]

Might be. Maybe I'll get all psychoanalytical eventually. Maybe not. I have better things to do.

I'm afraid that's an occupational hazard when your daughter has a keen interest in psychoanalysis. What better things are there to do, I wonder?

Catch every single fucking pokemon in existence, of course.

You may need a bigger house for that, dear.

Well, by the time I have all of them I'll have enough money for that house, won't I.

Maybe, maybe not. You may decide to give up that dream to pursue something else.

If I did, it would be for something equally profitable, I'm sure. Maybe I'll become a Korean pop star instead, who knows what the future holds.
