Personality: During a conversation with Jane, Dirk told her; “If it puts your mind at ease, I'll be the one pulling the strings here.” It’s a perfect description from the mouth of the Prince of Heart himself. Dirk is in all things a plotter and a schemer. He has plans upon plans for whatever challenges he and his friends may come across, and even when things go wrong, he’s the one who takes charge. He had the foresight to pretend he was still asleep on Derse in order to get more information, and he was prepared to take over as Jane’s server player at the drop of a hat when things started to go wrong in their session. He’s not omniscient, so there are things he doesn’t plan for or expect, such as Jake and Jane appearing on Derse, but after he gets over his surprise, he gets to work, and manages to not only revive all of his friends, but gather them in one place with a very complicated plan that required very fast thinking, good timing, and a willingness to first kill himself, then to trust Jake to revive him.

There’s no question that Dirk cares about his friends. His over-the-top gifts to Jane and Jake should prove it, if nothing else, considering how much time and effort he put into creating robots for them. He gives steadfast advice to all of them (talking to Roxy about their playing SBURG, and telling Jake and Jane that they need to be more like one another). Sometimes, though, the way he shows that he cares can be convoluted. The closer he is to a person, the more dedicated he is to making them stronger, and he will act in an infuriating manner while doing so. His interactions with Jake, for example: He gives Jake a robot that constantly beats him up in fights, he forces Jake to talk to the auto-responder instead of Dirk himself. He's doing all of this to make Jake a better fighter, and less gullible, but he's still being rather infuriating through the process of it.

He doesn’t just apply this idea of constant improvement to himself, though. It’s true that Dirk presents a rather inflated opinion of himself as being the bastion of cool, but at least some of that is earned, and there’s some sort of humility under there. He constantly builds robots and fights to the death against them, for example, doing the same sort of thing he’s subjected Jake to. As for his rapping, he made two rap-bots to fight against. Squarewave is a robot he can always beat, but he made Sawtooth to be insanely better than him, and he’s never managed to beat him.

His constant efforts at improvement have certainly paid off. He was able to face down Imperial drones, though he only survived because of Sawtooth's help. His curiosity has left him with a comprehensive knowledge of history- he is basically able to tell Jake exactly how the Condesce took over Earth, and there are quite a few sections that he could apparently go into more detail about. He learned how to build robots, how to draw, taught himself language and how to read, all on his own. There was no one to push him to do anything, so he did it all himself.

Dirk has a habit of layering his words with ironic meaning that doesn’t help prevent people from getting irritated with him- even when he’s saying something sincerely, everyone around him has to look for hidden meanings in what he says, because there's always something. Some of that is part of the way he grew up, since he’s lived alone his entire life. The only contact he’s had with real people, until the game started, was to talk to three other kids through the internet. The rest of it is just his personality. Of all of the alpha kids in Homestuck, he shows the least amount of expression. Half the time, the canon art of him doesn't even have a mouth or eyebrows drawn in, that's how blank his face is. He feels the need to be on top of everything and show that he knows what he’s doing. Talking about his feelings doesn’t exactly help with that. The closest he comes to admitting to a problem is discussing uncertainty over affairs on Derse with UranianUmbra- he does mention it to Roxy, but he doesn't go into detail, and says that he'll have it handled. He will occasionally hide his feelings through in his love of math- he’s likely to fall back to algorithms and formulas, though not as frequently as his auto-responder does. The only robot with a complete and mostly human personality he makes is actually the auto-responder, who is literally a copy of himself.

Dirk is... well, the best way to say it is ‘pretty damn weird.’ He’s got an obsession with puppets and smuppets and a habit of describing them in extreme detail that weirds out everyone he talks to. He likes horses and has pictures of “swole bunny men” on his computer. He likes hats even though he doesn’t/can’t wear them. He takes things too far, whether they’re jokes about teaching Jane irony, or making his part of a set of heirloom rabbits. He raps. He idolizes his ancestor for standing up to the Condesce through his films and for fighting her. Of course, most of this only makes him fit in with his friends even more, since they're just as weird as he is, but they're still silly little quirks that make Dirk who he is.

First Person Sample:

Excuse me for stating the incredibly obvious, but look's like I'm not in metaphorical Kansas any more.
I knew our session was going to fuck already, but I didn't think it would screw up to the point of sending me to the wrong game.
Once again, existence has decided to prove to me that things can go wrong beyond my wildest expectations. It gets a gold star.
Not that I can't appreciate the irony of Pokemon, of all things.
It's simply negated when my sword is taken away and replaced with a 'mon with knives for hands.
Not to mention the gift backpack and the terrible music.
I hope there's something else worth listening to.

In the meantime...
Roxy. Jake. Jane.
I expect to get contact from you as soon as you see this.
Not to insult your intelligence, but your track record for survival in new places is utter shit.

Third Person Sample: It was day two of the trip along Route 29 toward Cherrygrove, and Dirk had realized about fourty-four hours ago that he was completely unprepared for this. 'This' had been many things over the past few days, but right now, 'This' consisted almost entirely of snow, for the moment. He frowned down at the snow under his feet as he took another step, listening to it crunch.

He'd seen snow before. Occasionally, a storm would cause some to pile up on the roof of his apartment, and he'd found plenty of pictures on the internet. Snow wasn't novel. It was just that traveling in it was.

The traveling alone he could have dealt with. Sure, in the fifteen years of his life he'd never really had any solid ground to walk on before, but he'd gone swimming and he'd strifed. He wasn't out of shape, and if it had just been a matter of walking, he would get used to it.

A cold breeze slipped down Dirk's collar, and he hunched his shoulders. His hands, even tucked into pockets, were stiff with cold, and his toes were numb. This was the problem with the cold. His Derse clothing was hardly meant to keep him warm during the winter, but it was better than the outfit he'd had in his backpack. The wifebeater was completely useless to him in this weather.

He stepped carefully around an icy patch, and tucked his hands under his armpits in an effort to warm them. "The first thing I'm doing when I get to Cherrygrove is finding somewhere to take a shower," he muttered aloud to himself. "Then buying a coat. Fuck freezing to death."

Dirk glanced up from the road in front of him toward the sun. It was a few hours until dark. Soon enough, he'd break out the sleeping bag and warm up. Maybe he'd get in some sleep. Then, tomorrow, he'd only have one day of travel left. It couldn't happen soon enough.
